We're juicing: Juice Generation 1-day cleanse review

Sometimes you just need to press the reset button. After a bad bout of food poisoning for Joy and a few weeks of spotty nutrition for both of us, a hard reset was in order.  Juicing seemed like a great way to get back on track.

The concept of consuming raw cleansing juices is not new, but it has increased in popularity over the past few years, particularly in New York City, where we live. There are dozens of cleanses that you can buy and follow. We chose to purchase our juices at Juice Generation because their one- and three day cleanses had good reviews online and we could easily pick up the juices ourselves.

We decided on the one-day cleanse from Juice Generation, which is a Salma Hayek-endorsed juice shop with multiple locations in NYC.  Their cleanses are said to “restore your glow”, “kick start weight loss”, “re-balance gut health” and “sharpen your mind”.  It consists of 6 fresh-pressed, unpasteurized juices that are to be consumed every 2 hours.  Given the lack of preservatives in the juices, they must be consumed within 3 days of purchase. They give you about 1000 calories a day and tons of vital nutrients. It is recommended that you ease into the cleanse by phasing out coffee, alcohol, wheat, dairy and processed foods for 1-2 days prior to the cleanse. All juices are raw, organic, gluten-free, vegan and certified kosher.  

A few disclaimers:

  1. Y’all we didn’t technically do the lead up days. In fact, we may have indulged in a few rose ciders the day before we started. Our bad. As vegans we don’t eat dairy and haven’t been consuming coffee or processed foods lately so our only mistake was the alcohol.

  2. We purchased our juices at the store instead of having them freshly made/delivered.  It was a matter of timing, and impatience.

Now onto the juices!

Juice #1: “The Professional”

Ingredients: collard greens, swiss chard, kale, spinach, wheatgrass, cucumber, apple, lemon, ginger

Thoughts: We have always joked about being a ‘fake vegans’ because of our utter distaste for green juices.  However, “The Professional went down relatively smoothly.  The initial taste is reminiscent of a bland green salad but the after-taste is all apple.

Juice #2: “Citrus Super C”

Ingredients: pineapple, grapefruit, orange, mint

Thoughts: Perhaps it is because we rarely drink juice, but this was the raw-juice equivalent of an orange soda mixed with High C.  Totally delicious! It gave the extra boost June needed to make it through her busy morning.

Juice #3: “Supa Dupa Greens”

Ingredients: kale, parsley, collard greens, cucumber, celery, lemon, apple

Thoughts: This tastes as described - super green.  The flavor is akin to biting directly into a fistful of grass with no chaser.  It tastes healthy and if you drink it ice cold  it is refreshing. It was definitely Joy’s least favorite of the bunch.

Juice #4: “Spicy Lemonade”

Ingredients: lemon, lime, agave, cayenne, alkaline water

Thoughts: Yum! This one provides the much-needed jolt of energy that you will need after at least 6 hours of juicing.  The cayenne hits your directly in the back of the throat, and it's not a bad feeling. Replace the agave with maple syrup and remove the lime and it is virtually the same spicy beverage used for the Master Cleanse popularized by Beyonce several years ago.

Juice #5: “Daily Detox”

Ingredients: carrot, cucumber, apple, lemon, ginger

Thoughts: Not quite as delicious as the “Citrus Super C” , but refreshing. The carrot and apple provide the sweetness while the ginger gives it a nice kick. We can rock with it.

Juice #6: “Protein Buzz”

Ingredients: blueberries, banana, plant protein, almonds, vanilla bean, dates, alkaline water

Thoughts: More of a smoothie than a juice, this is the most substantial of them all. It drinks like a meal. We could drink this as a dinner replacement many nights a week and feel satisfied.

Overall: We didn’t find it hard to do this for a day. The juices were tasty, varied and provide enough energy to get through our busy days. We did feel slightly low energy after drinking juice #3, but Juice #4 solved that problem with the quickness. As long as you plan your life accordingly, this is a quick reset plan for your mind and body.  We liked it so much that we did it for another day and will be started the Blueprint cleanse the day after to have three full juicing days.

Tips:

  • Keep the juices refrigerated all day. It is safer and they are tastier.
  • Do the cleanse on your weekend. Weekends are where our health habits fall apart. Juicing gave us a purpose and a plan.
  • Juice with a friend or family member. When your motivation wanes, you will always have someone to lean on.
